The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG), Prof. Riziki Shemdoe, has announced that a total of 937,581 students who scored between 121 and 300 marks, including 508,477 girls and 429,104 boys; have been selected to join Government secondary schools for the 2026 Form One intake. This number also includes 3,228 students with special needs, among them 1,544 girls and 1,684 boys, who have been placed in 5,230 Government secondary schools across the country.

Prof. Shemdoe made the announcement today during a press briefing held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Dar es Salaam, aimed at updating the public on the selection results for students joining Form One in January 2026.

According to the Minister, the allocated schools include both boarding and day schools. Government boarding secondary schools are categorized into three groups:

  • Special Schools for high-performing students
  • Technical/Skills-based Schools (Amali)
  • National Boarding Schools

Prof. Shemdoe emphasized that, thanks to the Government’s thorough preparations, all 937,581 selected students girls and boys who passed the 2025 Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) will officially begin their first academic term on January 13, 2026.

He urged the newly selected students to fully utilize this opportunity by studying diligently so they can achieve their personal goals and meet their parents’ expectations.

At the same time, the Minister called upon Regional and District Commissioners, Local Government Leaders, and Council Executives to work closely with education stakeholders to ensure that all selected students begin their studies in January 2026 without any challenges. This effort aligns with the Government’s commitment to providing Free Basic Education.

“I direct Regional Commissioners, Regional Administrative Secretaries, District Commissioners, Council Directors, and School Heads to finalize all preparations to receive Form One students by January 12, 2026 for boarding schools, and January 13, 2026 for day schools,” he stressed.
